Founder of the lifestyle website TheChicSite.com and CEO of her own media company, Rachel Hollis has created an online fan base by sharing tips for living a better life while fearlessly revealing the messiness of her own. Each chapter begins with a specific lie Hollis once believed that left her feeling overwhelmed, unworthy, or ready to give up. As a working mother, a former foster parent, and a woman who has dealt with insecurities about her body and relationships, she speaks with the insight and kindness of a BFF, helping women unpack the limiting mind-sets that destroy their self-confidence and keep them from moving forward. From her temporary obsession with marrying Matt Damon to a daydream involving hypnotic iguanas to her son's request that she buy a necklace to "be like the other moms," Hollis holds nothing back. With unflinching faith and tenacity, Hollis spurs other women to live with passion and hustle and to awaken their slumbering goals.

annoying! submitted by bookher on July 14, 2019, 7:47pm Man, this woman is annoying! I guess if you are so unaware of how to live life and in need of ridiculously basic life tips from a very annoying woman, than by all means read this book.

Not the greatest submitted by soonrightaway on January 5, 2020, 10:09pm Excitedly picked up this book after I heard about how popular it was, but was quickly disappointed by the low-level writing and mediocre anecdotal advice. Hollis mostly discussed her own personal issues and setbacks she's had in her life, and how's she's overcome them, which is fine, but not always useful to everyone. Note that there's also a pretty strong Christian perspective shared throughout, which also wasn't my cup of tea.

Helpful and interesting submitted by gracekil on June 12, 2020, 11:23am I found her life lessons and experiences to be interesting and helpful. We all got struggles!

Basic and Unhelpful submitted by reaganmalcolm on June 24, 2020, 11:19pm I wanted to like this book, after hearing what great reviews it garnered, but it fell flat. The advice Hollis shared was overall uninspiring, and I found some of her takes to be lacking.

It was okay. submitted by Trudie G on July 26, 2020, 11:45am I sort of enjoyed this unique self-help book which gives a humorous and honest approach to unpack lies we tell ourselves and how to give yourself grace and remove those misconceptions and live a more purposeful and fulfilling life. I liked Rachel's honest accounts of her life's stories helping me to feel empowered and hopeful to make internal changes. At times, though, she came across pretentious and self-important, hence the three star review.

Half-Baked Advice with a Heavy Dose of Performative Christianity submitted by ekalish92 on June 11, 2023, 9:04pm While there is the occasionally decent well-meaning piece of advice, author Rachel Hollis was clearly still fairly young while writing this book and was coming to some, at best, half-baked conclusions about the world, parenting, and her marriage.

As an example, despite the fact that nearly every story she shares about her "amazing husband" is full of red flags, she continues to talk about how she hit the jackpot and how every one should seek a partner like hers. Fast forward a few years and they do, indeed, end up getting divorced - not much of a surprise as he was clearly a jerk from the get-go.

The amount of performative Christianity throughout the book was really downplayed when it was first published and getting so much buzz. If you have the stomach for that (and can tolerate someone trying way too hard to come across as quirky and spunky), you may ultimately enjoy the book more than I did.
