It was not his war. On the wrong planet, at the right time, for the best reasons, Hadrian Marlowe started down a path that could only end in fire. The galaxy remembers him as a hero: the man who burned every last alien Cielcin from the sky. They remember him as a monster: the devil who destroyed a sun, casually annihilating four billion human lives--even the Emperor himself--against Imperial orders. But Hadrian was not a hero. He was not a monster. He was not even a soldier. Fleeing his father and a future as a torturer, Hadrian finds himself stranded on a strange, backwater world. Forced to fight as a gladiator and into the intrigues of a foreign planetary court, he will find himself fight a war he did not start, for an Empire he does not love, against an enemy he will never understand.

“My mother was late to my birth” - Chapter 1 of Empire of Silence
This was an entertaining read. It has a very epic scope, spanning multiple planets and many years, and it’s only the first book in a series that already spans 5 books (as of 2023), and the length of this book in hardcover can be categorized as a brick (it’s massive). The world building is fascinating, and the characters make sense. The protagonist, Hadrian, is a very typical epic sci-fi/fantasy main character: a talented noble-born white man who wants more to life than politics under his father. Had feels very much the adult epic fiction version of the YA self-insert ‘plain’ white girl who has to save the world (especially with the first person narration). However, the situations Had gets himself into are gripping, and showcase different aspects of his personality. What interested me the most in this book was the development of the theology and alien society near the end. Fans of Brandon Sanderson or Dune will especially enjoy this book.
