Outstanding Adaptation submitted by Meginator on July 27, 2019, 10:19am I fell in love with the book this is based on immediately and completely, but I wondered whether a film could do it justice. This film has. Just like the graphic novel, this film delicately, yet directly, encapsulates all-encompassing grief and the coping mechanisms we create to deal (or avoid dealing) with it. The script and visuals adhere closely to the print version, amplifying the book's best aspects while tweaking them ever so slightly to fit a cinematic retelling. The muted color palette and balanced CGI effects contribute to a visual environment that echoes Barbara's emotional journey, and fine performances carry the required emotional nuance to make the story resonate. This is a well-considered film and an outstanding adaptation; I highly recommend it for its deep exploration of the power of grief and the strength we must summon to engage with it.
