Although separated by continents and decades, Josef, a Jewish boy living in 1930s Nazi Germany; Isabel, a Cuban girl trying to escape the riots and unrest plaguing her country in 1994; and Mahmoud, a Syrian boy in 2015 whose homeland is torn apart by violence and destruction, embark on harrowing journeys in search of refuge, discovering shocking connections that tie their stories together.

Okay submitted by shivatavane on July 17, 2019, 7:28pm It is a great story but I think it would have been better if they made three different books for each person.

good book submitted by liqian on August 2, 2019, 3:33pm it was confusing to switch between the characters but overall it was a really good book.

Amazing! submitted by skalantr on August 23, 2019, 11:00am The story of 3 refugees collides in very surprising ways.

Tough subject submitted by Xris on April 23, 2021, 8:59am This book was a bit hard for me to get through, because such awful things were happening to the characters. But it was a great, important story, and I loved how the three timelines got woven together at the end. And I liked how it was based on things that actually happened. I usually like to read things that relate to a book I like, but I think reading about the St. Louis would be too sad for me right now.

Parent reference submitted by leah karr on August 22, 2022, 10:18am My son read this book in 5th grade. The conversations he initiated with me while reading this book were thoughtful and full of questions. I recommend it highly!
