COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Coulda submitted by markwells on July 14, 2019, 5:39pm This could have been better. I suppose its difficult to make a docu-drama that does justice to the real event. I would rather see a documentary about the match with real archival footage. Grade: C-.

Excellent Performances submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 9:08pm This is a fairly straightforward depiction of the brief rivalry between Björn Borg and John McEnroe, anchored by excellent performances by Sverir Gudnason and (yes) Shia LeBeouf, respectively, in the lead roles. The film tries to explore each man’s psyche leading up to the pivotal 1980 Wimbledon final, taking pains to emphasize the differences between them. Though the film works really well as a deep dual character study, I never became fully invested in the tension, and not only because I already knew the outcome (plenty of films manage this just fine; I could never fully sympathize with McEnroe despite LeBeouf’s genuinely excellent and sympathetic portrayal. The film offers an intriguing look at two approaches to athletic excellence, and it is very well made, but it may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
