COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Pop Country Goes Pop submitted by Meginator on July 3, 2019, 10:24pm This album is a bit of a departure for Keith Urban: though his music has flirted with pop influences throughout his career, the country base is almost entirely erased here and the results are largely in line with a lot of current pop radio. Give a couple of these songs to a modern boy band and they’d feel right at home (this is not necessarily a criticism). Despite this, the general vibe is very familiar; at its core, this feels like a Keith Urban album, even with its slightly altered musical vocabulary. The general vibe is as laid back as ever, with feel-good lyrics about love and lust bracketing the usual singalong choruses. Urban’s attempt to tackle the #MeToo era in “Female” comes off as clumsy (at best) when juxtaposed with songs celebrating women for their looks, but I’m inclined to give him credit for trying and I hope that he thinks more deeply about his words outside of such message-based tracks. Overall, this album takes Urban’s music in a different direction while somehow fitting in with his previous work, and as someone with relatively broad musical taste I found it to be an interesting, mostly successful, experiment.
