Eleven-year-old Ada's clubfoot has been fixed at last, and she knows now that she's not what her mother said she was - damaged and deranged. But soon Ada learns that she's not a daughter anymore either. Who is she now? World War II rages on, and Ada and her brother move with their guardian, Susan, into a cottage with the iron-face Lady Thorton and her daughter. Life in the crowded home is tense. Then Ruth moves in. Ruth, a Jewish girl, from Germany. A German? Could Ruth be a spy? As the fallout from war intensifies, calamity creeps closer, and life during wartime grows even more complicated. Who will Ada decide to be? How can she keep fighting? And who will she struggle to save? This masterwork of historical fiction completes Ada's journey of family, faith, and identity that began with The War that Saved My Life, and shows us that real freedom is not just the ability to choose, but the courage to make the right choice. -- from dust jacket.

Fun submitted by lguenthner on June 17, 2018, 2:20pm This is a good family curl-up-and-read book. It will make you cry though. This story tells us about the struggles of 11-year-old Ada, who struggles with a club-foot, and lives during the time of Hitler.

Wonderful Book submitted by ReadBooks on June 23, 2021, 10:15pm I loved this sequel to The War That Saved My Life, but I would definitely advise reading that book first. It made me cry, but it is a powerful story as well as informative.

Ada's story continues submitted by Diananana on July 27, 2023, 5:45pm In the first book, The War that Saved My Life, one could say that Ada learns that she is not who her mother says she is, that is a worthless cripple. In this companion book, Ada forges her own identity. This takes place as World War II is testing the mettle of everyone in England. The author movingly and painstakingly portrays the everyday privations and heartbreaking sacrifices that were necessary to defeat Hitler and his armed forces.
