A Clever Take on the Original submitted by Meginator on July 13, 2019, 10:06am This is a fun board book that pairs blocky, cartoonish illustrations of modes of transportation with relevant quotes from Jules Verne’s classic travel novel. The language will go over a lot of readers’ heads, but the creators take advantage of the opportunity to introduce relatively common carriers such as train, ships, and horse-drawn carriages alongside less-known ones like a palanquin and a sail-powered sled. The book has no story to speak of and is driven instead by its illustrations, which feature highly stylized versions of Phileas Fogg and loyal Passepartout in occasionally comic situations. Touches of light visual humor keep the book moving even when the subject matter is a bit advanced, and while this book isn’t essential it is clever and has enough of an accessible educational component to pull of its nice trick of appealing to fans of the original and readers who won’t encounter it for another 10 years or so.
