COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Amazing Collaborations submitted by Meginator on June 25, 2019, 8:59pm Though the title may be a bit of a misnomer, as the music leans more toward the blues than jazz or swing, this album is a fantastic collection of collaborations between the iconic Wynton Marsalis Septet and a surprising array of musicians from across the industry. The Septet’s style provides a sense of consistency across the album, but each song leaves room for its featured artist(s) to make a distinct impression. The most notable example of this may be “Fool’s Paradise”, a collaboration with Jimmy Buffett that, naturally, features a steel drum, one of the last instruments I expected to hear after a dozen tracks of more traditional jazz-infused blues. The album functions both as an excellent blues album in its own right and an illuminating example of cross-genre collaboration that speaks to the power of blending and bending boundaries to create moving music.
