Drawn Together by Minh Le submitted by Melissa Calabrese on August 10, 2018, 4:58am This is a sweet story about a grandfather and grandson who overcome barriers by discovering they both have a love for drawing. Their beautiful, collaborative pictures create a visual story about two warriors who eventually work together to bridge the divide between them. This is a wonderful text that demonstrates the use of symbolism and metaphors.

Phenomenal, Made Me Weep submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 5:47pm This exceptionally emotional picture book tells a simple story of a young boy who finds a way to connect with his grandfather even though they do not share a common (vocal) language. Fittingly, the story is nearly wordless, with a few moments of verbal communication supplementing Dan Santat’s extraordinary, vivid illustrations. The story springs to life in vibrant illustrations, with the characters’ dueling illustration styles telling the story just as effectively as the text and the narrative panels, which themselves use layouts borrowed from comics. It all comes together as a subtle, moving story about connection and cultural exchange that is as deep as it is lovely to look at.

A really great story about a boy bonding with his grandfather submitted by Margaret on August 11, 2023, 4:59pm The story is beautifully illustrated, and it’s a very meaningful situation about connecting with your grandparents. Dan Santat once again, blows it out of the water with his amazing art style. The colors leap off the pages and Minh Lê’s writing is brilliantly done. This book is perfect for children and adults and I highly recommend it.
