You Go First submitted by vicki browne on June 18, 2018, 7:03am So glad I met Charlotte and Ben. Charlotte wants to be a geologist and loves words. Ben is obsessed with Harry Potter, presidential history, and recycling. Charlotte in Philly and Ben in Louisiana meet while playing an on-line scrabble game. Both working their way through middle school, about which Charlotte says, "Middle school seemed like an endless aching game where everyone knew the rules but her." You move through one week with Charlotte and Ben as they deal with bullying, changing friendships, a run for student council, and a skip day from school to check out the Philadelphia Museum of Art. My favorite word of the week was Saturday's : reciprocal: a mutual relationship-one that is equal, matching, and complementary. The author, Erin Entrada Kelly, was the 2017 winner of the coveted Newbery Award for 'Hello, Universe.' In my book, this story was a winner too.
Middle school woes submitted by jcottey on August 23, 2018, 3:14pm Charlotte’s father is in the hospital and her best friend has moved on to other friends. Ben is very logical and fact-oriented and is running for student council. Neither is having an easy time with middle school. They know each other from playing scrabble online, but live far apart. At times, it seems like they are each other’s only friend. It was a decent book, but didn’t really hold my attention.
