COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Aesthetic Re-Invention submitted by Meginator on July 16, 2020, 8:10am Evanescence’s music has always had a sweeping, orchestral quality to it, even when meshed with goth rock’s hard guitars, so it’s no surprise that this re-imagining of their previous work focuses heavily on strings and brings Amy Lee’s voice to the fore. None of these updated versions, nor the new tracks sprinkled in, deviate too far from the originals, but they do accentuate certain aspects of these familiar songs that aren’t as immediately obvious in their previous incarnations. The sole exception, “Imperfection”, is heavy on synths and is good enough that its massive departure from the album’s overall vibe is completely forgivable; like the other tracks, the finale feels large, a final sweeping gesture that appropriately caps the band’s look at their past and, perhaps, points a way toward the future. This album exceeded all of my expectations and I can’t wait to see what Evanescence does next.
