COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Experimental Electronica Roots submitted by Meginator on July 7, 2019, 5:59pm I highly suggest reading the liner notes before diving into this album, because the context of these tracks’ creation is essential for understanding (and possibly for enjoying) them. Created out of a combination of analog and digital equipment in the mid-1960s(!), these early forays into electronic music incorporate a lot of interesting techniques to weave unique sonic tapestries out of otherwise dissonant sounds. The first and third tracks most closely resemble modern electronica, with occasional melodies layered onto multi-textured backgrounds, and the second track feels more experimental and hypnotizing, almost like radio static. Some of the sounds are surprisingly reminiscent of tones you find throughout the history of electronic music, including the types of bleeps and bloops artists still use today to evoke a certain sense of artificiality. In isolation, this isn’t necessarily the most pleasing music to the ear, but when you consider the way it was made (and that it was all improvised on the spot), it’s an incredibly impressive achievement.
