"On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person--but also that the cold-reading skills she's honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money. Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased...where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it."-- Provided by publisher.

EERIE submitted by johnbiancke on June 24, 2018, 6:19pm Eerie, creepy, old fashioned mystery
Good "Masterpiece Mystery" Style Book submitted by ekjensen on July 23, 2018, 4:30pm A sad young woman tries to cheat out a wealthy dysfunctional British family out of their inheritance from a dead mean matriarch/grandmother. Long book for this storyline with a somewhat surprise ending.
Dark, spooky mystery

Loved the creepy atmospheric setting that was woven in throughout the story. Loved the tarot-reading, skeptic protagonist trying to unravel the dark mysteries and secrets surrounding her family. The pacing, however, was off to me. The beginning moved too slowly, while the end moved so quickly that I had to re-read a few parts to make sure that I understood what was happening (though I suppose that occurs with most mysteries). Overall, I would recommend it - probably would be ideal to read in the fall or winter months, snuggled up with a blanket and cup of tea.
Twisty Mystery submitted by selujules on August 7, 2018, 6:56am I really liked this twisty mystery- typical Ruth Ware, if you've read anything else by her. I 100% agree with the above review: "The beginning moved too slowly, while the end moved so quickly that I had to re-read a few parts to make sure that I understood what was happening"- nice to know it wasn't just me! Would recommend.
Ruth Ware submitted by AGAPHD on June 25, 2020, 8:12pm Ruth Ware is a pretty reliable choice for fun, surprising mysteries. This one was no different. An easy and entertaining read.
boring submitted by mtebo on June 23, 2022, 9:50am Nothing happens until the very end of the book.
Unexpected ending submitted by bjkoch on July 6, 2022, 2:08pm Suspenseful and unexpected
Intrigue submitted by michl8705 on August 26, 2022, 2:21pm I loved the dark vibe, reminded me of Daphne DuMaurier. The mystery was okay, some loose ends not really wrapped up, but I enjoyed it.
