Destined from birth to serve as protector of the princess Zariya, Khai is trained in the arts of killing and stealth by a warrior sect in the deep desert; yet there is one profound truth that has been withheld from him.
Destined from birth to serve as protector of the princess Zariya, Khai is trained in the arts of killing and stealth by a warrior sect in the deep desert. In a world where exiled gods live among mortals, the dark god Miasmus is rising, intent on nothing less than wholesale destruction. To keep Zariya alive, Khai's only hope lies with an unlikely crew of prophecy-seekers, on a journey that will take them farther beneath the starless skies than anyone can imagine. And Khai is unaware there is one profound truth that has been withheld from him....-- adapted from jacket.

Great submitted by zmclaugh on June 15, 2018, 12:01pm This was a really good fantasy story: immersive world, interesting characters, and lots of interesting things going on in terms of gender.

Excellent fantasy from a favorite author submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 21, 2018, 4:15pm Oh, outstanding. Carey is one of my favorite authors, hands down. She builds rich, lush worlds (hmmm… even in a desert?) with characters who rise off the page and live fully in my mind. _Starless_ takes us from childhood to adventure with Khai and his soul’s twin Zariya, who seems the least likely of all to save the world from the anger of the gods. But the prophecies have deemed otherwise, and a fascinating crew of unlikely outcasts gathers to stop the darkness.

Carey’s worlds always feel like you could go off the page in any direction and she knows more of the story that she just hasn’t had time to tell. I love that in a book. Every character, every city, every religion, every culture has history and depth. Carey tells just enough to know that it’s there and how it effects the moment we are reading, but not so much that we get lost down the rabbit hole of unnecessary detail.

If you enjoy excellent fantasy, I highly recommend this book.
