In an original world reminiscent of Edwardian England in the shadow of a World War, cabals of noble families use their unique magical gifts to control the fates of nations, while one young man seeks only to live a life of his own. Magic marked Miles Singer for suffering the day he was born, doomed either to be enslaved to his family's interest or to be committed to a witches' asylum. He went to war to escape his destiny and came home a different man, but he couldn't leave his past behind. The war between Aeland and Laneer leaves men changed, strangers to their friends and family, but even after faking his own death and reinventing himself as a doctor at a cash-strapped veterans' hospital, Miles can't hide what he truly is. When a fatally poisoned patient exposes Miles' healing gift and his witchmark, he must put his anonymity and freedom at risk to investigate his patient's murder. To find the truth he'll need to rely on the family he despises, and on the kindness of the most gorgeous man he's ever seen.

Lovely Story submitted by jbpuckett on July 11, 2018, 3:08pm This story was a whole lot of fun, and I enjoyed the mystery as well. Miles is very relatable. While this story does take place during a war, and Miles is a doctor, there isn't that much gore, only one or two descriptive paragraphs. I'm trying not to spoil the story, so there isn't much else I can say. If you were interested enough after reading the above description, you should check it out. Even if the "reminiscent of Edwardian England" bit isn't your idea of a good time. Just imagine the beginning of electricity being available.
Outstanding

I got very immersed in the world of this book - reminiscent of Edwardian England, I guess, in that bicycles are a major mode of transport, gaslight is being trended out in favor of a magical version of electricity, and society is highly stratified based on class; less so in that there seem to be no social restrictions on women and homosexuality is acceptable-ish (at least for the upper classes) as long as one eventually does one's duty and marries for politics and procreation.
Set in this world is an engaging mystery with a relatable protagonist that I don't want to spoil at all, so I will simply say that I almost literally couldn't put the book down.
