Fun Book to Introduce Kids to the Pride Movement submitted by Mandyghutton on June 24, 2018, 11:03pm My daughter gravitated towards this book because of the rainbow flag on the cover (she's 5 and loves rainbows). I read it to her and my 8 year old and it was a great introduction to the Gay Pride movement for them. The ideas were easy enough for them to understand. Great book!

Nicely done submitted by sara on July 15, 2018, 11:30am The story of Harvey Milk, Gay Pride, the flag (and Gilbert Baker) is told in a very clear, unbiased fashion. The illustrations are very colorful. There are biographical notes and a timeline in the back of the book as well as suggestions for further reading. Nicely done.

Lovely introduction to Pride submitted by jtomasello on July 25, 2018, 9:35pm This book was a wonderful book to introduce what Pride and the rainbow flag are. Easy for my 7 year old to understand.

Cute but Blunt submitted by dntanzer on August 31, 2018, 2:56pm This a beautifully draw kid's book briefly explaining the history of the pride flag. I thought it was mostly cute, but pretty blunt with how they explained Harvey Milk's assassination. I enjoyed it and think it would be good for children to read.

Good book! submitted by Xris on August 5, 2019, 2:24am Nice introduction to Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Pride flag. Love that it includes his quote about having to give them hope. :)

Not Quite the Whole Story...But Still Informative submitted by Meginator on August 11, 2021, 4:24pm As the title indicates, this book tells the story of how the now-ubiquitous rainbow flag came to symbolize queer communities. The narrative is fairly straightforward and written in a way that provides some historical context for readers new to the topic, although the book strangely fails to initially situate Milk in San Francisco and instead implies that he was in New York when he was elected to office. The illustrations are (unsurprisingly) vibrant and colorful, with textured backgrounds employed in the abstract illustrations and a few collage images used to excellent effect. The book might give Milk an inflated role in the flag’s creation and eventual widespread adoption, but it does offer a positive introduction to a symbol that young readers will encounter throughout their lives.
