An alphabet book with a plot submitted by FordAlpha on August 20, 2018, 9:42pm The idea of crafting an actual story from alphabetical words is not new, but Mo Willems' effort is unusually successful. Not only do his 26 A-to-Z words (combined with the illustrations) form a cohesive narrative thread, but the plot has rising action with well-paced ups and downs; a dramatic climax; falling action; and resolution. There is excitement, pathos, compassion, and catharsis; drama and humor. It's remarkably well crafted. It's also the kind of gross-out humor that little kids love. (V is for Vomit.) My 4- and 6-year-olds can't get enough re-reads of this book, and they laugh and laugh every time (especially at F, which is perfectly timed, and P).

Typically Amazing Willems submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 9:06am Just when you think you’ve seen everything an alphabet book can be, along comes Mo Willems to add a new wrinkle with his characteristic charm and ever-present wry humor. The book forms a complete storyline, with a couple of unexpected twists and a bit of gross-out humor near the end, and the illustrations are characteristically strong (look out for a few nods to Gerald, Piggie, and the Pigeon). Not everyone will be okay with the entry for V, but otherwise this is an excellent choice and a nice spin on a familiar, and often predictable, genre.

Amazing submitted by downing on August 6, 2022, 2:20pm IT'S MO WILLEMS!
