Spring, 1940. Following Britain's declaration of war on Germany, Maisie Dobbs has been investigating the disappearance of a young apprentice working on a hush-hush government contract. Her investigation leads from the countryside of rural Hampshire to the web of wartime opportunism exploited by one of the London underworld's most powerful men. When a final confrontation approaches, she must acknowledge the potential cost to her future -- and the risk of destroying a dream she wants very much to become reality. Meanwhile, the plight of thousands of soldiers stranded on the beaches of France causes one of Maisie's friends to make a decision that will change his life.

Well done! submitted by teri on July 17, 2018, 9:25am Maisie Dobbs is back again, and WWII has just begun. As always, Winspear does a fine job of depicting the lives of ordinary citizens in the midst of war. Along with a good mystery, the reader comes away with a better sense of that particular time in history. Also, I always enjoy reading Winspear's "acknowledgements", where she often explains where her ideas originate (often from family members who lived in England during the 1900's), and gives you the facts behind the story. This time - it's all about paint!

Dunkirk and more submitted by camelsamba on July 5, 2023, 10:13pm Dunkirk features in the plot this time (with connections to both Priscilla’s and Billie’s families), but the main focus is on the family of a teenage boy who was helping paint military buildings with fire retardant paint. As usual, there are fascinating historical facts and wonderful interactions between the characters.
