An art book that feeds the eyes and more submitted by ccrose on July 9, 2019, 8:38pm I’m on a van Gogh binge and I found this book mentioned in a NYT review. What sold me was a Van Gogh night painting on the cover of the village of Arles, painted at a distance so you see a wide curve of their river lit by golden street lanterns. The book takes you through a movement in painting moving away from painfully releastic detail to dreamy images from the imagination. The time frame is 1880 to 1930 so you see how that mystical feeling is handled by several generations of painters, all intent on painting color and shapes as if they lost their glasses and all is soft edged and filled with awe. Love it!
