A+ submitted by Judeyblu on July 4, 2018, 10:08am My fascination with women that have survived and thrived despite a dysfunctional childhood confuses me but is undeniable.
Perhaps it is the reassurance that growth is possible.
If so, Tara's story undeniably does that.
Her reflections on growing up with a fervently fluctuating father, unschooled for most of her youth, and working to understand her world, history, math, humanities, and travel are inspiring.
Well written. (less)

Slightly skeptical but a triumph. submitted by KMLB64 on June 28, 2019, 10:03am Not sure that the 2 major vehicle accidents, incident in the junk yard with the metal, the person on fire, the hair dragging, etc. all happened, that the people survived, and that there was almost never professional medical intervention. I mean, maybe it happened.
This also makes a terrible case for "home schooling". Sure, there are all kinds doing it, but these folks are paranoid, abusive, and ill-educated themselves. It gives one pause when thinking about the electorate in 2020. "Socialist" is a very evil word to this crowd.
A teen driving 40 miles one way to buy a test review book is impressive. The kids have to justify themselves for studying and for not working in the junkyard under hazardous conditions.
All and all, a story of personal triumph. Very readable. A page-turner. Loved it.

Interesting! submitted by karenkay on July 31, 2019, 3:27pm I found this book to be interesting. Tara Westover was raised loosely as a Mormon but this is not the typical story of being raised in an abusive Mormon home. This story was more about being raised in a home where multiple family members have significant mental health problems that are untreated because of their distrust of the government and traditional medicine.

Inspiring submitted by liao_jasmine on July 20, 2020, 6:07pm Even with all the adversity she endured through her life, her courage and determination to break through is inspiring.

A look into the world often covered up submitted by kwolney on August 8, 2020, 8:20am This memoir is an opportunity to see into a world we often do not get a chance to. It allows us to try to understand the trauma some children/people endure within their lives. It is also a very real look into mental health and the effect one person’s unrecognized/untreated health issues can have on a family.

Definitely worth your time! submitted by Rebecca on July 14, 2022, 4:04pm Tara's story is both heartbreaking and triumphant. I can't get enough of it! Her perseverance against all odds to love her family and also break free is challenging and inspiring. She is intelligent, compassionate and courageous. She writes in a way that transports the reader to the time and place and makes one feel what she is feeling. There are no simple solutions, only complex human relationships, beliefs, and paths forward.
