Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza--but who knows what they'll find seven months after the invasion?

Solid Series Conclusion submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 10:58pm Though imperfect, this book offers a nice conclusion to the Illuminae Files, using the now-familiar format of primary source documentation to tell the story of a group of teenagers thrown together in a desperate bid for survival after a rogue corporation attacks a remote (and illegal) planetary mining outpost. The authors get a bit tripped up in juggling the multiple narratives, sometimes ignoring one piece of the picture for long enough that the reader can become slightly disoriented upon encountering it again, but the suspense ramps up quickly enough that the book is a fairly breezy read for its 600+ pages. Unlike the two previous books, this novel is a more straightforward, and serious, space opera, though it retains the unique narrative style (and language) that has driven the entire series. This book focuses fairly heavily on the impact of war and military occupation on both soldiers and civilians and allows for some moral ambiguity on the ground level, though the large villains are unquestionably (and sometimes comically) evil. Despite some pacing issues, this is a satisfying (if slightly too neat) conclusion to a surprising series that, for all of its flaws, remains compulsively readable.
