I Knew He Had Real Talent; This Proves It submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 9:20am I’ve long admired Daniel H. Wilson’s imagination and his ability to cleverly and intelligently examine the possible effects of artificial intelligence on human lives, and he is certainly in his element here. Short fiction plays perfectly to his primary strengths: the breadth and variety of his technological visions, his examinations of those advances’ positive and negative consequences, and his reflections upon the potential ramifications for individual people and humanity. Wilson ably adopts different narrative modes and tones throughout the collection, as appropriate, and the results are always thought-provoking. From fully operational sentient androids fulfilling specific functions to violent human-machine hybrids and machines just becoming self-aware, Wilson’s stories run the gamut of the artificial intelligence experience, twisting old tropes and using technology to expose aspects of the human experience in a way only science fiction can. None of these stories is an absolute standout, but together they share compelling visions of possible futures, offering plenty of food for thought and inspiring reflection, while entertaining in their own right.
