Uneven Conclusion submitted by Meginator on June 23, 2018, 3:19pm I wanted to love this film, having fallen in love with the Barden Bellas from the first two films. Though the musical performances are as strong as ever, with the core group of Bellas intact and having as much fun as ever, the script just cannot carry the story. Caught between irreverence and heart, the film introduces too many new secondary stories, wrapping them up in an ill-conceived quasi-action plot that is too much of a spoof for its own good. Rebel Wilson can land even the dumbest jokes, which work well with her believable aloof delivery, but these fare poorly in most other circumstances; why not fall back on some of the delightful, intelligent snark that characterized the first two films? Moreover, the emotional arcs are unconvincing, with the Bellas reuniting only to talk later about how they had been actively performing together the whole time; it's a minor inconsistency, but one that is nearly unforgivable when it carries the weight of the franchise. Yet all is not lost: it's remarkable (and much appreciated) that a major studio produced three films starring a group of strong women, each with her quirks, having fun together and embodying the best aspects of female friendship. The cast and crew obviously poured their hearts into the production, and its main faults lie in a weak script that tries to do a bit too much, and against the grain of its predecessors. Still, even a bad Pitch Perfect film is an incredibly good time, with a fitting finale scene that bids the Bellas the fond farewell they deserve despite the film's other weaknesses.
