a fresh start in a colorful universe submitted by nsvinicki on June 16, 2018, 10:14am I've been waiting impatiently for this book for four years after it was announced. As a long time fan of Tamora Pierce, it's exciting to see her return to this series after almost ten years.

This book tells the story of a major character in her "Wild Magic" series, Numair Salmalin - his formative years at a mage university and the adventures he has. This is the first time that Pierce has written a young male protagonist, as she's largely known for her female protagonists. She made her name in the 80's and 90's for her richly varied and beautifully written YA female heroes. This book covers a large span of time in Numair's life, but in that lovely way Pierce has, I still feel like nothing was missed. Compared to some of her other titles, the pace can be a bit jerky - it rushes and drags but levels out in spots. Because I love Pierce's attention to detail and world-building, it's hard to satisfy my expectations for both areas. Compared to other books she's written, it seems like it takes longer to show the world she's painting than it did in her early works, but the level of detail is still there. Overall, I deeply enjoyed the book, and it was able to keep continuity with her other works - something that she hasn't always been successful in doing!

You don't need to have read any of Pierce's other books in the Tortall universe to enjoy this title - but it might make you want to rush out and get the rest of them! This is significantly longer than any other book she's written in the universe thus far. This made it enjoyable for someone who's grown up with her books, but might make it a little harder for kids just getting into her books. It's still wonderfully accessible and enjoyable for all ages of fantasy lovers!

Great! submitted by zmclaugh on July 29, 2018, 10:59am It's so much fun to get back to Carthak! It's also fantastic to see characters that we already know just meeting each other and growing up. There's a lot here to explore and I'm excited to see where this series goes.

There were some weird bits that reminded me of Briar's book and seemed random, but I was so excited to read this book that I overlook any potential plot issues.

Like coming home submitted by hartre on August 9, 2018, 3:40pm I still remember the joy and delight I felt in discovering Tamora Pierce's books for the first time. Her writing style is consistently high, though similar in all her books. Reading this felt like coming home, though it certainly is the beginning to a series and not a stand alone! Others may enjoy reading some of her earlier works first, though it's not necessary to follow the plot.

Now from a male's pov! submitted by mjdavies on June 18, 2019, 10:30pm Tamora Pierce is known for her strong female heroines, so when I heard she was writing about Numair's past, I was hesitant to pick up her newest book, even though she's my favorite author. Even so, I was drawn back into the realm of Carthak and magic, where small gods still walk the earth even while the majority of people don't believe in such "tribal magic". This book was a great introduction to Numair as a child, and we were able to see him grow into adolescence. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!

Good worldbuilding submitted by Princess Cimorene on July 24, 2020, 4:39pm I enjoyed this book. I think Tamora Pierce has real skill in worldbuilding, and with every series she expands readers' understanding of this expansive world a little more. I really enjoyed getting to know Cathak better.
