Why women tell each other, "text me when you get home" -- The friendships that shaped our own -- Mean girls and nice girls -- All about the boys -- A new focus on friendships -- Our BFFs, people, and soulmates -- Strength in numbers -- How our friendships end, change, and endure.
"Text me when you get home." After joyful nights out together, female friends say this to one another as a way of cementing their love. It's about safety; but more than that, it's about solidarity. A personal and sociological examination--and ultimately a celebration--of the evolution of female friendship in pop culture and modern society.

disappointing submitted by schriste on March 10, 2019, 6:24pm This book was frustrating. I was expecting a general look at women's friendships; instead, the author relied mainly on her own anecdotal experiences with friendship and pop culture (TV in particular) to make broad statements about women's friendships now and in the past. Those experiences don't necessarily generalize beyond herself and her own friends. While some attempt is made to include diverse perspectives, it was so centered on the author's experiences it read mainly like a memoir.

This is an important and interesting topic but it was treated superficially in this book.

Also disappointed submitted by sfrantom on August 17, 2019, 10:10pm Being one of those female friends that says and hears "text when you get home", was really hoping for an in-depth look at the power of those friendships and how we look out for each other as women, and how that has evolved. Instead, it was written about very specific circumstances in her own life that were not relatable (at least not by me) and felt at times whiny and at times a bit like bragging. Sadly, I can't recommend this book.
