There are no civilians. submitted by terpsichore17 on July 16, 2019, 2:10pm Well. That hurt. Hana and Emi's story is told a bit too simply to be memorable as prose (and there's a bit of awkwardness/tense oddness in handling past events without Italicized Flashbacks), but the facts of what happen to women and girls in war - both those captured to be raped by soldiers, and those left behind to see their families and land destroyed - gut me.

Bracht notes that her way of ending both parts of the tale, particularly Hana's, were not necessarily realistic, but I am grateful to her for the closure she gave them.
