Strange but talented woman submitted by JulieCraig on July 7, 2016, 12:19pm This is the story of John Maloof discovering Vivian Maier after her death. Vivian was a talented photographer, although she didn't share it with the world. She took work as a nanny to allow herself time to photograph. The story is told through interviews of people that knew her. Fascinating story about a strange but talented woman. John Maloof was able to get people's interest in the photos and produced several public shows of her work.

Finding Vivian Maier submitted by ccrose on August 2, 2019, 11:28am I’ve sought out each of the books of Maeir’s photographs, 3 by now. She took pictures, obsessed to make that her life work but telling no one. This documentary pieces together what was known about her, who remembered her and could flesh out how true this obsession was. Maier seems like someone we all have known, brushed elbows with, but barely recognized the talent behind her quirky, difficult ways.
The combination of intense talented focus and unending need to do this made her an artist.
Her photos are taken on the streets of New York, Chicago and her one brief travel to Europe. In this documentary, John Maloof, the fellow who uncovered Maier's photos, goes to France and searches out a photo printer who remembers her. There are even photos she took of him. Then months later, she writes him a letter, tentatively asking if he'd be interested "in a business" printing postcards with her images. That is the closest she came to sharing her work. But she didn't follow through. It's the memories from the families she served and their children that really bring to life her complex ways. Loving and creative with the children, but not all. Took them with her out and about so she could take pictures. One woman remembered Maier taking her to a stockyard. It shaped their lives to have had those years with her.
