A distinguished professor emeritus who lives alone with his housekeeper can only come to terms with his egocentricity by traveling back in time to his earliest youth, finding there the seeds of his failure as husband, lover, father. This film deals with the phenomena of old age wherein childhood memories return with ever-increasing clarity while great stretches of the prime of life vanish into obscurity.
DVD, NTSC, region 1, full screen (1.33:1) presentation; Dolby digital mono.
COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Superb Movie, but see the 2nd DVD to fully understand why. One of my all-time favorites.

Citizen Kane may be the best movie ever made, but this one by the Great Ingmar Bergman is one of my favorites, saw it first when I was 18 in college and it had a strong influence on me even back trhen when I did not know all I know now about the movie, and about life.
You can enjoy the movie any time, but to better and fully understand it, also see the materials in the 2nd dvd (extras).
An old man looks back at his life submitted by mandevil on July 7, 2021, 9:35am I liked it better when i first watched it in the 1970s. So for me it did not live up to my memories as a great film. Very experimental for its time but seems fairly quaint and disappointing for this time. See it if you ate a student of film.
Iconic Bergman/Sydow pairing submitted by timdufresne on June 15, 2022, 8:49am As a younger person, I mostly know Max von Sydow from his later work, it's remarkable to see such a talented actor so early in is career. Remarkable performance with legendary direction.

One of my personal favorites among Bergman’s films
This film may have inspired Tartovsky to make “Mirror.”
