The story begins as L takes on the 'Kira' case, in which countless criminals are mysteriously dying of sudden heart attacks. L leaves his headquarters in Los Angeles and travels to Japan, for he believes with a 97% certainty that the killer is in Japan, and that he may have to risk his live to solve the case.

He is interested in the book so he takes it home and studies it and experiments with it. It turns out, if he writes a name and imagines the person's face, the person will die!
