COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Sheffield band shake the world. submitted by raghu on March 15, 2007, 5:05pm Lyrical beauty and melody rarely find a home together, but these lads from Sheffield (UK) combine them with elan. Having picked up playing instruments only as late 2002, to produce an album of such musical cohesion as WPSIATWIAN, has got to involve some sort of genius. Riding an immense underground campaign powered by mp3 sharing, blog and youtube posting fans and word of mouth hype, they sky-rocketed to the top of the charts. Fans would sing along to their unreleased songs at small, cramped gigs. Typical of their media-shy style, they proclaimed 'dont believe the hype' causing a bigger tidal wave of publicity.

The album is a compilation of some of their best songs. They talk about very ordinary experiences and events in any teenagers life such as being thrown out of a disc by a bouncer to having a moody girlfriend wanting more out of a relationship. Their songs are never a rehash of words that most pop acts seem to churn out, instead they offer a very unique and culturally distinct perspective which ends up reaffirming the fact that teenagers all over the world are exactly the same.

Matt Helders is the standout talent with his very powerful yet natural drumming. Alex Turner is the chief wordsmith and singer and his musical abilities are clear from the start. Being the child of a music teacher must help. Jamie Cook on guitars seems to be getting the hang of things and should get better. What they show is that even while one is still learning to play and not yet fully technically accomplished you can still turn a brilliant tune. This is a sign of great things to come from the quartet, the inevitable comparisons to the Fab Four not withstanding. They are original in sound and word, not doubt, but also in attitude by sticking to their northern accents and not trying to sing in an international (meaning american) voice and talking about colloquial experiences from their part of the world. By not trying to fit in, they obviously become very cool and hip.

This review describes the band more than the album, but if you want to appreciate WPSIATWIAN you need to know where the Arctic Monkeys come from.

Songs to check out : From the Ritz to the Rubble, Mardy Bum (meaning "moody girl"), A Certain Romance and Fake Tales of San Francisco.

A work in progress submitted by keldan315 on August 25, 2018, 11:33pm This album is rough around the edges and a bit punk, but you can see flashes of some of the things that made the AM great
