The War of the Roses submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 28, 2013, 9:15pm As part of her series about the war of the roses, in "The Kingmaker's Daughter" Philippa Gregory tells the story of the daughters of Richard, Earl of Warwick, whose efforts put various men on the throne of England. The novel is primarily the story of Anne Neville, who first marries Edward of Westminster, Prince of Wales, and later of Richard III of England, thereby becoming Queen of England. The novel also briefly touches on Anne's elder sister Isabel Neville, wife of George, Duke of Clarence.

Gregory's portrayal of Anne, Richard and the other royal family members is markedly different from Shakespeare's, so readers may be a bit thrown by the contrast in the way they had perceived these individuals. Richard is far more sympathetic and Anne truly loves him, seeing him as her savior from a previous loveless marriage. By contrast, Shakespeare depicted Richard as evil and conniving, who manipulates Anne into marrying him, even though Richard killed her previous husband.

Gregory's novels are mostly historically accurate, although she does sometimes take poetic license or include contemporary rumors as truth in order to move the plot and build the dramatic tension. At the end of each novel, Gregory explains which parts are accurate and which are not.
