Narrated by Michael Jayston.
George Smiley, retired from the world of spies and treachery, is summoned by an old friend to help with a small problem: at the exclusive school where Smiley's friend teaches it seems there's been a murder. Frightfully embarrassing, of course. Perhaps George could quietly look into the matter? Once more, Smiley is up to his elbows in spies and treachery, of a different sort.

Smiley plays detective
submitted by camelsamba on August 3, 2017, 9:10pm
Although written by Le Carré, this is not really an espionage book: it's just a detective story where the detective is a famous former spy (George Smiley).
George Smiley was contacted by Miss Ailsa Brimley, an old friend / co-worker, who now runs The Christian Voice. An letter from a worried reader – the wife of an assistant master at the distinguished Carne School – leads them to her murder. Carne has deep-seated church connections and class-consciousness figures heavy in the plot (e.g. the “quality” in the title - so much focus on class, upbringing, ‘quality’). There are interesting twists and turns as Smiley unravels the string of clues leading to the culprit.
ALERT: this unabridged BOCD was missing the first chunk of chapter 4. Disc 1 ended with "chapter 3f" and 2 starts with "chapter 4b." I thought it might just be a tagging error but there is a jarring continuity gap as well - disc 2 starts in the middle of a discussion, not the discussion that ended disc 1. I was convinced I was MISSING KEY CLUES and since I couldn’t get to the library I tried the “look inside” feature at Amazon, only to be thwarted because those pages were not available. Finally I noticed that the library has an electronic preview that DOES include the missing pages so I was able to get the info.
