COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Unexpected Track List submitted by Meginator on June 24, 2020, 7:34pm Under Arthur Fiedler, the Boston Pops always seemed to put together impeccably designed programs and laid down some all-time classic versions of various standards, but this particular album misses the mark just slightly. The orchestral adaptations of traditional Irish folk songs are expansive and intriguing, but they drain the tunes of some of their soul in the process. The pairing of the “Irish Suite” with American folk songs feels a bit jarring and unexpected; it makes sense in theory, but the transition is surprisingly abrupt. Nonetheless, the Boston Pops consistently operate at a high level, and the ensemble is never going to be bad in any sense. Taken in isolation, these tracks are charming, with a very literal orchestral arrangement of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” and a sing-along to “The Band Played On” serving as unexpected highlights.
