Doesn't Quite Come Together
submitted by Meginator on August 20, 2022, 6:13pm
I think I understand what the author was trying to do here, but the pieces don’t quite fall into place, creating a disappointing and confusing reading experience.
Although this short graphic novel does do a fairly good job of cleverly incorporating elements of the classic Little Red Riding Hood narrative into a modern superhero-centric tale, the book doesn’t adequately manage the flow of contextual information and it feels half-formed and rushed as a result. Frampton does incorporate Red’s origin story, it is thrown into the middle of the story seemingly at random and ultimately leaves many other questions unanswered (such as why the military automatically defers to her); likewise, the villain’s origin story is particularly weak and his motives are nebulous at best. Frampton does an excellent job with the action sequences and the art featuring Red in her superhero guise is excellent and inviting, with a range of panel layouts that help with the story’s pacing. However, the character design in the framing narrative was a bit off to my eye, and the characters look to be a bit…shall we say…under the influence. Altogether, this is a book of great ideas that don’t really come together, and its excellent action-oriented artwork ultimately cannot patch over all of the book’s flaws.
