Loved It, But Hard to Watch submitted by monkk on June 17, 2014, 7:54pm Overall I really loved this movie. The story is incredible and even knowing it previously, I was moved to tears at the end. Beware though, the violence is very graphic and difficult to watch knowing that this is something that actually happened in our history. The actors were wonderful, and the costuming outstanding.

True Story submitted by scarrieliz on August 5, 2014, 8:40am I love that this man's story has been told on such a large scale, all these years later. It was a little long and difficult to watch, but well-done.

Great submitted by yooth4556 on August 27, 2014, 11:24am Great

Great adaptation submitted by beeniepie on August 27, 2014, 7:19pm I had never heard of Solomon Northup before this film. Despite making several deviations from the source material, the movie was made in the spirit of the book. Each actor did an impeccable job breathing life into their characters and their struggles.

shameful submitted by lawrencekl57 on June 18, 2015, 10:11pm Until I saw this movie, I had no idea that free black people were captured and returned to the south. Disgraceful! Everyone should see this.

Interesting submitted by Motomori on July 12, 2015, 11:52am Very interesting, intense, and moving.

very intense submitted by Jackie77 on August 25, 2015, 6:48am Incredible heartbreaking. Terrible that people were treated this way for no reason other than the color of their skin. Great wardrobes in the movie, they depict the times. Great acting, I imagine this had to take a toll on each person involved. Thank goodness our country doesnt condone this type of horrible behavior any longer.

Not the usual submitted by kferguson on August 20, 2016, 6:53pm An unexpected story of slavery. Ejiofor is super

slavery submitted by rjsjwilliams on July 22, 2018, 1:28pm A great movie but difficult to watch. Knowing that he was a freeman with a family who were free, and then having him picked up and sent back South with some awful people was most difficult.

12 Years A Slave submitted by SBNB on August 15, 2018, 7:35pm This is an excellent movie. Plus, it's based on a true story. I would recommend it.

12 Years a Slave submitted by c_zhang on June 29, 2019, 12:42am Tragic and powerful.

Very hard to watch submitted by Nehemiah9 on August 3, 2019, 8:23pm but I think that was the point. For me it had a level of realism that made it very moving and tragic.

dq submitted by GioMuzique on August 5, 2020, 5:44pm very powerful

profound submitted by graytabby on August 7, 2022, 8:29pm it was truly spectacular, cover to cover. couldn't put it down! it tackled so many real issues.

12 Years? submitted by SaraP on August 8, 2022, 7:34am it's obviously an important film, but the there's no sense of time. If the title didn't tell us how much time passed, we'd never think it was twelve years. It seems like it happens in a couple seasons.
