A Good Way to Understand Jazz submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 9:39am This album has a lot of internal development, and as the tracks progress so too does Lester Young’s sound, morphing from big band and swing styles to a cooler syncopated sound. The solos are smooth and have a natural flow to them, with Young’s focus seemingly (and refreshingly) on establishing a mood rather than showcasing the limits of his speed. I particularly appreciated the repetition of tracks, which invites the listener to contemplate what it is about a particular take that makes it come alive and showcases the variety of improvisations that the best jazz musicians can muster from session to session. This is an excellent album through and through, and it is particularly good for listeners who are newer to jazz in general.
