Excellent Beyond the Singles submitted by Meginator on June 19, 2023, 11:43pm This album has the band’s biggest singles on it, but the other tracks are often just as good, with the musical style remaining very consistent throughout. The songs rely heavily on synths and even the (relatively) brighter options have a dark quality to them underneath the catchy choruses, often found in the lyrics. Overall, the quality and sound here are incredibly consistent without the tracks themselves feeling redundant or too repetitive, and the sound borrows from common sources but is wholly unique to Depeche Mode; it’s a little dated today, maybe, but it still represents really solid pop(-adjacent) songcraft.
