Descended from the river goddess Melusina, Jacquetta is blessed with second sight. As a young girl, she meets her uncle's captive, Joan of Arc, and realizes that they share the same abilities right before Joan's horrific death. Eventually, she is married off to the Duke of Bedford, and is introduced to alchemy. When the Duke dies, the talented window finds love in the arms of her friend, the Duke's squire Richard Woodville.

Love this Seris submitted by Kmocean on July 24, 2012, 2:51pm Love how Gregory brings al of these books together. Great listen!

Jacquetta of Luxembourg submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 28, 2013, 9:31pm "The Lady of the Rivers" introduces Jacquetta of Luxembourg, the mother of Elizabeth Woodville (who married English King Edward Edward IV, read "The White Queen" for Woodville's story) to many people. Few historians have studied Jacquetta and they know very little about her, so almost everyone know one else has heard of her. While Philippa Gregory's historical novels are well researched and very accurate, this one necessarily involves a great deal of speculation.

Gregory depicts Jacquetta as the descendent of a river Goddess and a witch who uses spells to benefit her family, an unproven rumor of the era. Jacquetta's story begins with her meeting Joan of Arc after her arrest, then attending Joan's execution, it goes on through her two marriages, which lead her to the English court of two English kings.

Like almost all of her historical novels, I highly recommend "The Lady of the Rivers," part of Gregory's series on the War of the Roses, also known as the Cousins' War, as well as "The White Queen."
