Read by Wil Wheaton.
At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut-- part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

Excellent audio edition of a fun book
submitted by cherylo on June 19, 2012, 9:15pm
Wil Wheaton is the perfect geek cultural icon to read this book. I laughed out loud at one very meta passage in which he is himself invoked by name in the pantheon of minor geek celebrity. An excellent way to experience this very geeky 80s nostalgia trip.
The book itself is not without flaws (see some feminist criticism of the book out there on the web), but for any fan of the dawn of video games, dungeons and dragons, or other geeky pursuits of the era of computers becoming personal, this is simply a must-read.
So So Good submitted by jmb.mlis on June 15, 2013, 10:03pm Really enjoyed listening to this one - in fact it was so good that my fiance kept stealing the CDs out of my car to listen to them in his car! Great narration by Wil Wheaton and EXCELLENT writing by Cline. I would recommend it to any tech savvy 20-something through 50-something.
Wil Wehaton
submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on June 14, 2014, 1:10pm
Wil Wheaton, of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" fame reads this novel that mentions him by name.
"Ready Player One" portrays a distopian future in which everyone, or at least everyone who can afford it, lives in a virtual reality online where they work, go to school and interact with others. Our protagonist, Wade Watts, lives in a trailer with his aunt. Trailers are stacked into high rises, a sign of how desperate the poor have become.
Through his academic achievement, Wade has gotten a rare scholarship to attend an online school. He figures out the first clue to an online puzzle whose winner will gain the ownership of one of largest corporations in the world, making them a millionaire. Watts is suddenly famous, and the target of those who want to kill him or co-opt him in order to win the prize for themselves.
Watts falls in love, tests his friendships, and infiltrates the enemy in this adventure for anyone who loves computer or video games.
Great audio book! submitted by leigh27 on June 16, 2014, 8:48am I loved this book. It's definitely science fiction, but I think it would be accessible and enjoyable to people who don't think of themselves as fans of this genre. The characters are well-rounded and likable. The story was peppered with pop culture references, which I happened to enjoy, but they don't interfere with the story. The choice of Wil Wheaton to read the audio edition was pure genius!
Wil Wheaton! submitted by tbbrown76 on July 13, 2014, 12:01pm He is excellent.
Amazing submitted by dahyatt on June 17, 2016, 10:03pm This book is just absolutely amazing. I have listened to this book three different times. The book is full of 1980s pop culture references. Anybody who grew up in the 80s will enjoy this book.

Loved listening to this submitted by jhaberich on July 22, 2018, 7:49pm I do not think of this as my genre at all but I really enjoyed listening to this book. I couldn't wait to find out what happened. I loved that Wil Wheaton read it - particularly as he is mentioned in the book.
80s Here We Come! submitted by delenich on July 3, 2023, 4:19pm Set in a dystopian future where people escape their bleak reality by immersing themselves in a virtual reality world called the OASIS. The story follows Wade Watts, a teenager on a quest to find an Easter egg hidden within the OASIS by its creator, James Halliday. The book captures the essence of '80s pop culture!
