A Bold Pairing submitted by Meginator on August 22, 2020, 9:49pm This pairing of orchestral pieces is an interesting one, as both pieces are very bold and accessible to audiences unfamiliar with instrumental music. Bartók’s “Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta” is dynamic and full of catchy melodic passages, though I had hoped that the title would mean more prominent use of percussive features and celesta; being unfamiliar with the piece, I don’t know if this is due to the conductor’s preferences or the score itself, and I’ll have to listen to this recording again. Hindemith is an apt companion to the better-known Hungarian here, and his Symphonie: “Mathis der Maler” is lively, with a lot of variation between the movements. Overall, this is an excellent symphonic duo by one of the world’s best recording orchestras.
