This graphic novel, based on the author's time spent working on a garbage truck, follows the escapades of three twentysomething friends as they clean the streets of pile after pile of stinking garbage, while battling annoying small-town bureaucrats, bizarre townsfolk, sweltering summer heat, and frigid winter storms. Interspersed with this comedic epic of reeking garbage cans and exploding trash bags are nonfiction pages that detail what our garbage is and where it goes.

Gripping it’s not, but Trashed does make for a moderately fun read. submitted by eknapp on September 21, 2016, 3:39pm A one-time trash collector converts his experience into a light-hearted day-in-the-life-of. He peppers the narrative with brief lectures on the history of the industry and trash generation, replete with statistics and editorials on our successes and failings. Trashed takes place over the course of a year so that we can experience all the seasons from a garbageman’s point of view. Backderf also enlightens us as to a number of recurrent trash collection horrors in excruciating detail:
• Cookers (maggot-filled cans)
• Diaper bombs (they explode when the hopper cycles)
• Kennels (dozens of bags filled with leaking waste every week)
• Engine blocks (300-600lbs)
• Forclosure piles (banks toss everything in the house)
• Yellow torpedoes (truckers urinate in water bottles and toss them out the window)

There’s just something distractingly off about the black/white/blue illustrations. The people look like marionettes.
