COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Frankly, Mr. Shankly submitted by Caser on September 9, 2010, 9:32am Gather round ye mope-sters, here lies the greatest of The Smiths' proper record releases, The Queen is Dead. Over 25 years have passed since The Smiths released their third record, and still it's drawing new fans and bringing old acolytes back to re-experience its tremulous magic. For even those that were slightly annoyed by Morrissey's hyper self-conscious, Hamletesque persona in their eponymous debut, or put off by the tipping of its hand sophomore effort, Meat is Murder, still, The Queen is amazing.

Johnny Marr built almost his entire legacy on this record, and it's a well deserved accolade. From the bounding "Frankly, Mr. Shakly," to the blistering Bigmouth Strikes Again and concluding with what many consider to be his most beautiful work ever, Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others, Marr is at his absolute best on The Queen is Dead.

But Morrissey is center stage here, as only he can be. Perhaps what sells this record to new audiences over the other albums is how much more confessional this record sounds from its lead singer. Both "I Know It's Over" and "There is a Light That Never Goes Out" feel honest, with only a hint of the melodrama he can sometimes overplay. And the lighter, playful songs like "Cemetry Gates" balance the entire record out, making the 10 tracks work seamlessly with each other.

Frankly, Mr. Shankly, the queen may be dead, but we need not mourn, for the record is as good as ever.

still a classic submitted by kencza on July 9, 2018, 8:28pm This may be their best tho' some other releases may be more familiar. I was a little late to the party
on this one but a revisit reminded me how good they could be.
