High Concept Covers submitted by Meginator on August 29, 2020, 2:00pm This album has a fairly straightforward concept, with alt-rock bands providing covers of current pop hits (despite the title, very few of these recordings qualify as punk, in any of its modern forms). Though many of the tracks sound more or less the same as the original versions, with harder guitars or rougher vocals substituting for meaningful change, a few artists really dig into the source material and put their own spin on it. It’s worth listening to the album once through to find the few gems, and the compilation offers an interesting commentary on current trends in both mainstream pop and edgy alt-rock.
