This graphic novel is a first-hand account of Congressman John Lewis' lifelong struggle for civil and human rights, meditating in the modern age on the distance traveled since the days of Jim Crow and segregation. Rooted in Lewis' personal story, it also reflects on the highs and lows of the broader civil rights movement. Book one spans Lewis' youth in rural Alabama, his life-changing meeting with Martin Luther King, Jr., the birth of the Nashville Student Movement, and their battle to tear down segregation through nonviolent lunch counter sit-ins, building to a stunning climax on the steps of City Hall. His commitment to justice and nonviolence has taken him from an Alabama sharecropper's farm to the halls of Congress, from a segregated schoolroom to the 1963 March on Washington D.C., and from receiving beatings from state troopers, to receiving the Medal of Freedom awarded to him by Barack Obama, the first African-American president -- From cover flaps.

Highly recommended submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 9, 2016, 10:32pm Do you know what cosplay is? It's dressing up like someone in a graphic novel, cartoon, or anime. Did you know that Rep. John Lewis went to the San Diego ComicCon and cosplayed himself as a young man from the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge? How awesome is that?!?

_March_ (Books 1 and 2) are a great entry into the Civil Rights story for anyone who doesn't know much about it (and even has some great tidbits for those who do). The format is wonderfully accessible for young people, and I highly recommend buying a set to read, and then donating it to your local library or school if you don't want to keep it for yourself. Lewis tells a wonderfully personal version of this critical time in our history, and the artist helps it to come to life before our eyes.

Highly recommended. Certainly good for middle school and up.

great introduction to Civil Rights history submitted by camelsamba on June 25, 2018, 11:02pm The March graphic (biography) series is a great way to introduce teens - everyone really! - to the history of the Civil Rights movement in the US. It is very well done.

A must read submitted by A2AE on July 2, 2019, 3:20pm An outstanding account of an incredibly dynamic man. This is a series that everyone should read; as a history minor, I read perhaps a paragraph about Freedom Riders in a textbook. In March, you live it with Lewis and his companions. You will gasp as the heroic actions of Lewis and the shocking encounters he had leading up to the march in Selma.

Superb graphic novel submitted by gladaaro on July 29, 2021, 9:55pm Great way to read about American Civil Rights history, I look forward to reading the other two books in the trilogy.

Wonderful submitted by manz on July 20, 2022, 3:38pm I highly recommend all 3 books in the series. So good, and such great and important information on on Lewis and Civil Rights activism.
