COMMUNITY REVIEWS

I Appreciate You, Tiny Cooper submitted by Caser on December 3, 2011, 3:16pm Thank you John Green and David Levithan (first of all) for making me laugh so hard while listening to this book that I actually got a few side stitches -- though that might be because I listened to this book on many of my cold early morning runs. Each chapter alternates narration between two different Chicago teenagers named Will Grayson, and here readers MacLeod Andrews for (lower case) will grayson, and Nick Podehl for (upper case) Will Grayson, are fantastic once again. Podehl is a voice actor that I will now go out of my typical reading comfort zone to hear him read books.

It's true that the character, Tiny Cooper, deserves his own book, though I did like reading about his many forays in love from the perspective of those who merely orbit his hugely fabulous personality. The book opens with, "Tiny Cooper is not the world's gayest person, and he is not the world's largest person, but I believe he may be the world's largest person who is really, really gay, and also the world's gayest person who is really, really large." The book explodes stereotypes, sometimes by indulging in them (Tiny writes, directs, acts, etc in his own musical his auto-biography, while will grayson is a dead ringer for Ally Sheedy's character from Breakfast Club), and then giving the characters so much depth and insight and honest flaws that they become, well, real. A great read or listen.
