"In real life was adapted from a story by Cory Doctorow called "Anda's Game" first published on Salon.com in 2004" --Colophon.
"Anda loves Coarsegold Online, the massively-multiplayer role playing game that she spends most of her free time on. It's a place where she can be a leader, a fighter, a hero. It's a place where she can meet people from all over the world, and make friends. But things become a lot more complicated when Anda befriends a gold farmer -- a poor Chinese kid whose avatar in the game illegally collects valuable objects and then sells them to players from developed countries with money to burn. This behavior is strictly against the rules in Coarsegold, but Anda soon comes to realize that questions of right and wrong are a lot less straightforward when a real person's real livelihood is at stake" --cover flap.

Who wants to play a videogame? Anda does! submitted by gulickb on May 4, 2015, 10:40am In Real Life is a story about a girl, Anda, who begins to play a massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) as a way to boost her confidence. She joins an all female guild and soon one of her guildmates offers her a job killing goldfarmers and bots in the game. Anda loves earning money playing games but soon her life is made more complicated by befriending one of the goldfarmers she has been paid to kill.

This book has beautiful artwork by Jen Wang who really captures the mood of the book. Cory Doctorow has created a beautifully written book about so much more than just a girl who plays videogames. I would recommend this to anyone who loves comics about the real world or online games.

It is worth reading over and over again!

Loved submitted by Whitetnchina on August 30, 2016, 9:14am Loved the art in this book!

I've read worse submitted by eknapp on September 6, 2016, 3:08pm In Real Life is a social commentary doppelganger. The lengthy, wordy intro talks about the human instinct for organization and the catalyzing effect of the internet and connectivity on such. Then it comes out the gate as a clear girl-power story (I'm skeptical of the claim that girls only play male characters even when there are plenty of female options, but whatever; maybe it's dated). Then it's about multiculturalism. Bullying, briefly. Finally, child empowerment

Eh, it was okay. The art is hit and miss. The only message that really resonated with me was that things aren't always what they seem and one has to look deeper and keep an open mind.

Great submitted by unknown on August 11, 2018, 1:32pm Great book, but it does have a lot of swearing......

Gamer girls submitted by Xris on June 21, 2023, 1:21am I'm a fan of Cory Doctorow, so I picked this up. It also helps that I play games too. I love that Anda helped someone in real life, while playing a game. Wished it was longer...
