A Ragtime Giant submitted by Meginator on July 4, 2022, 8:57am It’s easy to hear the beginnings of modern jazz and swing in these pieces for solo piano, although the music holds up purely on its own merits as well. Joplin’s ragtime compositions constantly change and push forward, with a characteristic bounce in the melodies and basslines and an evolving sense of rhythmic exploration that relies heavily on syncopation and anticipation. This is the sound of musical innovation in action, and the compositions’ cheerful tone and constant movement remain enchanting (and influential) today.
