Something New submitted by Meginator on August 11, 2021, 4:56pm This ambitious album is built around a hybrid folk/country core that expands to accommodate the additional musical influences that give each track its own identity. The resulting combinations can be surprising and varied (one track has a pseudo-psychedelic late-60s touch), but they come together nicely and naturally, without pretense. The lyrics are broadly structured as advice to a young man, and despite feeling occasionally over-worked they offer some moments of genuine reflection. Sturgill Simpson’s approach here is deliberate but not stilted, and the album offers a musical perspective that feels genuinely new.
