COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Jeff Buckley CD/DVD submitted by Caser on May 5, 2011, 8:38am For anyone who hasn't heard this record but is interested in Jeff Buckley's music, this is the edition to check out. The DVD that is included here, Making of Grace, provides insight on Buckley's character and his musical direction, and the production is not overdone in terms of praising what is considered by almost all critics a touchstone '90s record. The CD's alt takes and cuts that didn't make the final LP aren't anything wildly new, for these tracks have been available before, but for someone who wants to hear more from Buckley's limited catalog, they're a valuable asset.

Grace submitted by SBNB on June 17, 2013, 3:50pm I checked this CD out because I like the song "Hallelujah", but the rest of the CD isn't bad either.

Ethereal Voice submitted by rmhawkins on July 12, 2020, 7:12pm This album changed my life. It is a must listen for all fans of music. Jeff's voice is ethereal. Just check out Corpus Christi Carol and you will be blown away.

Disappointing Given Its Reputation submitted by Meginator on June 15, 2023, 11:10pm This album has a great reputation among music critics, but I just don’t find the genius in it. Part of my problem is the mix, which makes Buckley’s vocals almost impossible to hear even at loud volumes, particularly when he uses his falsetto range; I found it difficult to grasp onto most of the tracks because I simply couldn’t make out such an important cornerstone of their composition. The music itself is interesting in the way that it clearly incorporates a wide range of inspirations, and the album sounds both of its time (the mid-90s) and beyond it, with a timeless quality that I couldn’t quite put my finger on despite the fact that I didn’t particularly enjoy it; you can hear a bit of a lot of things in it, for both better and worse. Some of the songs have strong foundations, but waste them by combining unrelated musical ideas in ways that don’t do justice to any of them. The album does have one bright spot, however: the drums are absolutely amazing, providing a solid base as the songs meander and struggle to find their way. The percussion lines are creative and dynamic and worth listening to in an album that is otherwise a massive disappointment given its outsize reputation.
